What to do when the domain name you want has been taken?
You are a new business, a start-up, and finally you have the perfect name for your website domain. You’ve learnt how to register a domain name and gotten the courage to go ahead and get it … only to find that it’s already taken. D’oh!
So, what to do next?
// If you’re using your own name and that URL has been taken, consider looking at the new extensions. (So, rather than “JaneSmith.com”, you’d use “JaneSmith.Coach”.) There are many domain extensions; see if one of them fits your business. // If you have a name for your business (such as The Pistachio Club) and that URL is gone, list other keywords which would represent your business. Then input those into a domain name generator. Use that to kick-start your new search for a perfect domain name and find one that you connect to.
Bonus Tip // Naming your business
Naming a new business can be harder than you think. There is no right or wrong. But do consider the future. If you give your business a name that is very personal to you or that has significant sentimental value, think about how you would feel if you came to sell it. A friend had named her site after her children. As she pivoted in her business, she started to look at selling the old business. She was struggling to sell it. Then it dawned on her; it felt like she was selling her kids. There was such a strong attachment and meaning to the business name, she couldn’t let it go.
